(Hard SF) The Solar Lunchbox Prophet:

As the "Silicon Winter" of 2026 continues to freeze the consumer hardware market, a new kind of digital nomad has emerged. While the world’s research institutions are tethered to expensive H100 cloud subscriptions, Thomas F., a PhD candidate in Management Information Systems (MIS), is running
100-billion-parameter logic engines from a device no larger than a lunchbox. Thomas’s thesis, titled "Agentic Multi-Step Coordination in Variable Latency Environments," requires an AI companion capable of processing entire libraries of documentation and legacy codebases simultaneously."The cloud is a golden cage," Thomas says, adjusting his solar panel array on a beach in Tenerife. "When I’m hiking the volcanic trails of Teide or surfing the Atlantic, I don’t want to depend on a Starlink connection to ask an agent to refactor a thousand lines of code. I need the brain to be right here, in my backpack."
